This story about 'The Cumberland Gap' taught me something that I had always wondered about ...

Many decades ago, a singer called Lonnie Donegan had a pop song called 'Cumberland Gap' and I'd keep hearing the phrase:

"Cumberland Gap; Cumberland Gap; and 'Fifteen miles to Middlesboro".

It sort-of put me off, 'cos as an Englishman, i knew of Middlesborough in England, and also the English county area of Cumberland, but they didn't seem to 'fit'. Well, now I know!
