Here's an alternative ending for the engineer's experience ... one that I think shows a 'truth' declaration that is even helpful, and, a bit more realistic!:
Suppose that the engineer's 'last words' were: "I have faith in engineering concepts and I believe that I won't be decapitated ... and, when I survive the guillotine I will show how the Priest & the Judge were wrong in their pre-guiiotine declarations of faith and justice"
Then, when the guillotine failed for the third time, the engineer could reveal his 'knowledge' that he had assessed the guillotine's engineering structure and determined that the rope had a knot!
Thus he saves himself and also educates the Executioner ... a win-win!!
