How things change!

When I was 18 (and living in England), I went to university and got a grant (something similar to your stipend) for my education.

So your British friends are living in 'later times' there ... they have missed out.

perhaps all countries go through economic and philosophical 'ups-and-downs', and britain is currently on a 'down'.

Watch out Denmark!!
