When Will We Ever Learn? … A Poem and a Song
A 50 year-old poem: “Look Around You … What Do You See?”
WWWEL? (When Will We Ever Learn) is a simple poem, though the words and sentiments are far from simple.
I first wrote this poem in 1970 … over 50 years ago, and later puts chords to it and sung it to guitar accompaniment.
Read it today ... What do you think today? … Is “WWWEL?” still relevant?
Sadly, I think it is.
Here’s my 50-year-old poem:
Look around you
Look around you;
What do you see?
Do you see problems.
quarrels, turbulency?
Is this world a changing world,
or is it just the same?
- underneath the surface,
‘neath all that cellophane*
Fifty years ago they were a-warin’.
Look around you — it’s just the same.
Fifty years ago there was a drunkard in a cell.
Look around you … well, well!
